Many women have had a yeast infection at least once in her life. It's fairly common, and you'll generally know that you have one when you have it. Although the symptoms of vaginal yeast infection are pretty nonspecific, meaning the symptoms can be signs of other illnesses as well as yeast infection, you should generally be able to figure out that you've got a yeast infection.
The most common sign of a yeast infection is itching in the vaginal and vulva area. The itching can get pretty extreme if you let the infection persist without treatment. Sometimes the itching can be worse after urinating.
Other signs of a yeast infection can include:
* Burning
* Soreness
* Pain during intercourse
* Vaginal discharge. (odorless and typically has a white, thick appearance, similar to cottage cheese)
* Localized pain in the vulva area
About 5% of women will have a recurrent problem with yeast infections. If you have had 4 or more within one year that are not related to an antibiotic, you can consider yourself in this boat. Generally, recurrent yeast infections are related to another underlying medical condition that may require more aggressive treatments.
If you think that you may have a yeast infection, seek medical assistance of your doctor. Do not just go out an purchase an over the counter yeast infection treatment.
