Side Effects of Yaz Birth Control
September 17th 2009 13:38
Yaz, drospirenone/ethinyl estradiol, is a contraceptive that like any medicine carries some risk of potential side effects. Not everyone who takes Yaz will experience these side effects, but if you're taking Yaz or you're thinking about starting Yaz, you'll want to be aware of the potential side effects that the birth control may bring.
Some of the side effects are rather minor, but some can be more severe, especially if you continue to take the medicine after the first signs of adverse effects.
The potential side effects of Yaz have been determined in many clinical trials, comparing the effects of women who were on the medication and those where were not. The more minor side effects occur in about 1% of women who take the birth control, which is a fairly small percent, but you want to make sure that you know what the side effects are.
* A decreased sex drive
* Headaches
* An increased appetite
* Breakthrough bleeding or spotting (bleeding between periods)
* Vaginal discharge
* Vaginal yeast infections
* Nausea and vomiting
* Weight gain.
The more severe side effects with Yaz still occur infrequently, but they need to be reported to your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Those side effects can include, but are not limited to the following.
* High blood potassium
* Signs of a blood clot in the leg, to include pain in the calf, leg cramps, and leg or foot swelling
* Signs of a blood clot in the lung, to include shortness of breath, sharp chest pain, and coughing up blood
* Chest pain or heaviness, which may be signs of a heart attack
* Sudden loss of vision or vision changes, which can be a sign of a blood clot in the eye
* Signs of a stroke, to include vision or speech changes, weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, and severe headache
* Signs of liver damage, to include yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin, dark urine, and stomach pain
* Depression or other emotional changes
* Migraines
* Breast lumps
* Unusual vaginal bleeding that does not improve within a few months of starting Yaz
* High blood pressure
* High cholesterol
* Signs of an allergic reaction, to include unexplained rash, hive, itching, unexplained swelling, wheezing, and difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Not everyone will experience complication using Yaz, but remember that if you feel that something is odd, to consult your healthcare provider.

When my doctor first put me on it, she said that they've had really good results with few side effects. Although, I was not one of those females that had no side effects.

I also meet people constantly who know women with these side effects from Yaz only. You never hear of other birth control with these side effects.
Choose another one...it is not worth death for better periods.

I have been on Yaz, and experienced some of the side effects, but that doesn't mean that all women will see them.
All birth controls have the same potential side effects. They all affect women differently. Yaz just seems to affect more women than most other birth control contraceptive pills.
