How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

So it turns out that we're washing out hair too much. Go figure that daily hair washing is bad for you, but hey it happens right... If you look at the statistics, Americans, alone, wash their hair about 4.59 times a week, which is twice the times as Italians and Spaniards.
This obsession with washing out hair started May 1908 when the New York Times published a column telling women it was ok to wash their hair every two weeks, considering that at that time it was the norm to only wash hair once a month. Well, a few decades later, shampoo marketing campaigns started telling people it was ok to now wash your hair daily.
After all of the ads from companies such as Madison Avenue, Prell, and Faberge, it's become un-American to wash your hair daily. We see so many ads on how shampoo can make your hair silky smooth and healthy, none of which actually say anything about the frequency to which you should wash. We just all assume daily is good since it's what we've been doing for years.
Well, dermatologists are saying, and well have been for years now, that by washing your hair daily, you're stripping your hair of sebum, which is a beneficial oil, and in turn you are damaging your hair.
Once a month is not enough but once a day is too much; a nice medium is two or three times a week, which is basically every other day.
Many people are actually joining a full no-shampoo movement, and are instead using baking soda to wash hair and vinegar to rinse it. Although this is not going to lead to the same smell-good result, but this is a much greener solution to washing your hair than commercially packaged shampoos, and you're still cleaning your hair.
Many of us find that if we do not shampoo daily, our hair gets too greasy, but a little grease isn't TOO bad... And, it's actually been proven that by washing your hair less, your sebaceous glands will actually produce less sebum, which means your hair won't get as oily as you think.
On a side note, since many many of us in today's society are going green and eco-friendly, it is a good thing to not lather up so frequently you're saving plastic that makes the bottles and the manufacturing of the actual shampoo. So, you're not only helping your hair but the environment by shampooing less often.
