I'm Having Trouble Getting Pregnant

March 13th 2010 13:53
Some women can get pregnant at the drop of a dime - whether they want to or not, but other women may have trouble getting pregnant. I know a couple who tried for six months to get pregnant before they finally succeeded, but then I know a girl who got pregnant her first try (granted the guy didn't know she was trying till she got pregnant and started blackmailing him).

If you're one of those women who is just having a hard time getting pregnant, here are a few reasons why you may be having trouble.

1. Advanced age - women over 35 have older eggs, whereas a 20 year old has fresh, young eggs. Because women are said to be born with the eggs that they'll have throughout their life, the older you get, the harder it can be to conceive. It's definitely not impossible to conceive when you're over 35, but it can sometimes become a little harder.

2. Bad timing - When trying to get pregnant, it's best to plan your intercourse around your ovulation times. Yes, this just may take all the attraction out of it, but you won't get pregnant if you're not ovulating. The sperm will stay alive for a few days while in the body, so you have a lee-way time, but it's best to monitor your ovulation by your basal temperature and/or a ovulation predictor kit (good examples seen below)

3. Smoking - If you or your partner is a smoker, this can hinder your ability to get pregnant, as about 60% of women who smoke are more likely to be infertile than women who do not smoke; the smoke inhalation can damage your eggs as well as your partners sperm as there are over 2000 chemical in tobacco smoke.

4. Drug or alcohol use - Although for most women, it's pretty simple that you shouldn't do drugs or drink while pregnant, but these are things that you shouldn't do while trying to get pregnant either. There are some illegal drugs, such as marijuana, that actually suppresses your hormones, which can caused decreased sperm count and irregular periods. Alcohol is thought to affect fertility, so if you really want to get pregnant, you'll cut them both out.

5. Caffeine - It's thought that caffeine can reduce your fertility, and during pregnancy it can increase the risk of miscarriage. Some believe that caffeine is ok in small quantities as long as the intake is moderated, whereas others believe caffeine should cut out of the diet altogether. When trying to conceive, it may be best to cut out tea, coffee, chocolate, and most sodas, which will better your fertility odds.

6. Bad diet - You are what you eat, and if you have a bad diet and poor nutrition, it will be harder for your to conceive, as your body may not be functioning with balanced hormones. Eat a lot of green, leafy vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and a variety of fresh fruits. You may want to pump your partner up with Brazil nuts, as their good for sperm health.

7. Lack of exercise - If you exercise and get up and moving, you can improve your fertility and chance of getting pregnant. Whether you just walk the mall a few times or actually go to the gym, it's recommended that you exercise at least 3 times a day for at least 20-30 minutes.

8. Weight problems - If you're body mass index is greater than 24, you're considered overweight and prone to health problems. You'll want to try to manage your weight, as if you're body is healthier, your odds of getting pregnant will be a little better. Start eating healthy and exercising.

9. Stress - If you have a lot of stress in your life, you're fertility will be decreased. You want to try to relax and practice breathing exercises. Take time to yourself so that you can reduce your stress level. You want to do your best to try to keep your stress down throughout the entire process - before you conceive and after. The more stress you have on your body, the harder it will be to conceive and the harder it will be to have a healthy pregnancy.

10. Infertility - If you've tried every position- putting your feet over your head included- and you've been trying to conceive for a while, it may be a good idea to contact your doctor to see if you or your partner has a fertility issue. If you have a fertility issue, don't blame yourself; if your partner has a fertility issue, don't blame him. Fertility problems are not your fault, in most cases. It's just something you have to work around if you really want children. There may be options that you can consider.

The best that you can do when trying to conceive is to have intercourse every other day. This way your partner's little swimmers will be ready to go. If you have intercourse daily or multiple times a day, the sperm will be weak, but with a day to rest, they will be strong and they will live longer in your body. Plus, there will be more of them to swim around trying to find your egg to fertilize.
