Tibetan Leads Chinese up Mount Everest
May 7th 2008 22:01
Isn't this the most ironic thing you've read today? A 12-strong climbing team of Chinese mountaineers will be led up Mount Everest by Tibetan Nima Ciren.
The Everest flame is separate from the main Olympic flame. Bad weather over the weekend denied the climbers the chance to take the flame to the top of the world's highest mountain in what China hopes will be the defining moment of the torch relay.
Chinese climbers carrying the Olympic flame will make their final attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest on Thursday morning.
The ascent will be broadcast live on state television from early morning with the climbers expected to light the torch on the 8848-metre peak after climbing for around five hours.
Organisers have kept exact plans for the Everest ascent secret. Both Nepal and China have sealed off the area. Fancy that. Hope it snows.
