The Face of an Honest Man
May 8th 2008 08:02
I can't believe the meanness of some people, this honest man, cab driver Mohamed Khalil, returned a $4 million dollar Stradivari violin and all he got for his efforts was $100 - unbelievable! Just as well the city gave him a medal - he sure deserves it.
Quint, 34, left the irreplaceable 1723 "Ex-Kiesewetter" instrument – the work of master violin maker Antonio Stradivari - in Mr Khalil's cab on April 21, after returning from a performance in Dallas, Texas.
The violin wasn't even his.
While the distraught violinist called police and transport authorities, Egyptian-born Mr Khalil parked his cab for the night, unaware of its precious cargo.
The alert reached him the next morning and Mr Khalil, 57, arranged to meet Quint, who gave him $100. The cabbie has since been awarded with a medal by Newark city.
Quint gave a concert to New York cabbies today in gratitude for its safe return. The gesture is his way of giving thanks to the cab driver who reunited him with his lost 285-year-old instrument. He gave Mohamed and his family tickets to his next New York performance.
I know where Mohamad should have told him to stick them.
