The Duggars

May 10th 2008 11:35

Michelle Duggar has been pregnant for 135 months or 11 years of her life. Now she's pregnant with her 18th child and plans to have more.

James Robert "Jim Bob" Duggar (born July 18 1965) in Arkansas is a former state legislator who served in the Arkansas House of Reps from 1999 to 2002. He is a real estate agent and owns several commercial properties in his local area.

The Duggars say they live debt-free, which Mr. Duggar has said is “the fruit of a financial freedom seminar” he attended years ago. According to the seminar, the more child's wages you could recoup, skirting U.S. tax law, the better. I don't really understand that last bit but have a sneaky suspicion it's a bit sus.

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar recently revealed that Michelle is pregnant again, expecting their 18th child. The Duggar's supplied a written statement saying, "As a married, financially self-sufficient Christian couple, we have a Godly duty to procreate for the Lord, a duty we throw ourselves into with wild abandon."

I will refrain from commenting on that one.

Michelle’s been pregnant for 135 months or 11 years of her life.

Average number of months between Duggar births is 18.

Estimated number of Duggar diapers to date is 90,000.

The Duggars do approximately 200 loads of laundry each month.

The Duggars feed their entire brood for less than $2,000 per month.

The only person in the Duggar family whose name doesn’t start with "J" is Mom — Michelle.

Every Duggar child learns to play both violin and piano.

The family organizes their household chores by assigning "jurisdictions," so everyone knows exactly what their daily responsibilities are.

The Duggars estimate all the family members combined have worked approximately 39,000 total hours building their new house.

The Duggars are debt free.

What's the old saying, if it sounds too good to be true it usually is? My instinct tells me there's a very strong masculine will at work here. If a man loves his wife I don't think he would continue to keep her constantly pregnant, knowing what a toll it is having on her body.

They are indeed a beautiful looking family and I wish them well but I do wish that Jim Bob would give Michelle a rest.

This is a lovely story for Mother's Day, I think you make assumptions there, I think Michelle and her husband are in complete accord and I think this is wonderful.

Not that I am much of a "cow" myself, and I don't mean that disrespectfully, I just know I could not have done it.

They are the happiest looking, most relaxed family I have seen.

We don't know all their circumstances, but having money must help. They are sensational.

Thanks for you comment Katy. I agree with you that everyone looks happy and relaxed. I still maintain that a loving husband should put his wife's health first.

Surely 18 children is enough, I just can't imagine what they are trying to prove.

I think they just like having children, Anne, and some women are just naturals, plus of course they claim it is their religious conviction. Did you know there's a woman in one of the 'emerging' countries who had 53 children, some twins, some triplets and some singles. Unbelievable as it is it is a true story. She didn't look any the worse for wear than any other impoverished woman.

I just know I could not have done it.

Childbirth is very easy for some women, certainly Michelle doesn't look any the worse for it.

I'm sure if she felt overburdened they would stop, they are just different from the rest of us.

I think it is a wonderful achievement, but I agree for most women it would be too much, but I don't think it is fair to blame him, she does not seem to be protesting.

My best friend in high school was the eldest of a family of 12 - not quite 18, but it's still a big family. They were the most lovely family. I used to love going there because they were always so welcoming. And the mother was one of the most wonderful people I have ever met.
