Can You Be Friends with an Ex
July 7th 2009 18:13
There are a number of reasons as to why you would want to stay friends with an ex. Most people would assume it's because there are still some feelings, but that's not always the case. And, for the most part as long as there weren't any major problems in the relationship, especially towards the end, then there's no reason why you can't remain friends with your ex.
If there is any unresolved anger with your ex, then you can't be friends just yet. Typically, it will take some time for a normal breakup before both parties can be unbiased friends. If there are still any feelings left, then it's not a good idea to try to remain friends, as in the end, there could be hurt feelings.
Just remember that whatever attracted you to your ex is still going to be there.
After a normal breakup without any restraining orders and complications, you want to make sure that if you and your ex want to remain friends that you set up a set of rules and guidelines. You don't want there to be any misunderstandings.
If there is any sexual tension or emotions left in the relationship, or if one party feels it but the other doesn't, then a friendship between you two needs to wait until all sexual emotions are gone. That's the main thing that's going to ruin the friendship, as it can stir up jealousy and other emotions.
If there is any question, you want to sit down with your ex and have a long talk so that you both know and understand the guidelines. Even if you've already outlined them, you may need to do so again.
