Minimize Scars- Scar Treatment

March 17th 2009 14:10
We all have scars to some degree or another, and it's just not the most pleasant thing to have to deal with. Men can typically wear their scars well, and it can be very attractive depending on the location and story behind the scar, but women aren't so lucky. The one good thing about scars is that they can go away, but depending on the scar it may take a short period of time or a long period.

How your scar looks is dependent on the following factors:
* How big/deep the wound was
* Location
* Length of time to heal the wound
* Your age
* Your genetic disposition to healing wounds and scarring

As for treating a scar and minimizing the scar's appearance, you'll find that different treatments will work for different people differently. That's a lot of "differents," which is why you will probably have to try a few scar treatments before you find the one that will reduce your scars the most.

Just remember that generally, your body will fade a scar over time, and the various treatments will enhance the body's tendency at scar reduction. Some scars just won't go away completely, but you can try the different treatments to minimize them as best as possible.

You can try many of the over-the-counter creams and patches, or you can go the extreme route and consider dermabrasion, laser treatments, injections, and chemical peels.

As for the at home scar treatment methods, you can consider some of the following tips and tricks at minimizing scars.

Commercial Scar Treatments:
There are a number of over-the-counter treatments that you can also try to minimize your scars. Try some of the following treatments that have been proven effective to reduce scarring. Just make sure that you follow the directions carefully in order to achieve maximum results.

Herbal Creams
* Aloe Vera: Break open a leaf from an aloe vera plant and apply the gel from the inside of the leaf directly to the wound; aloe vera contains both vitamins C and E, as well as zinc, all of which contain fast healing properties.
* Calendula: Calendula is an excellent anti-inflammatory that is known to promote new cell growth around a wound. Apply calendula directly to the wound until healed, as it has been proven to be a great scar treatment.
* Gotu Kola: Gotu Kola has been proven to help rebuild injured cells and reduce inflammation, which reinforces the tissues in and around the wound making it an effective scar treatment. You want to mix 1 tablespoon of Gotu Kola with just enough water to make a paste; apply the paste directly to the wound until it heals.
* Vitamin E: Apply the contents of a 200IU capsule of Vitamin E directly to the scar.
* Vitamin E and Wheatgerm Oil: Mix equal amounts of Vitamin E and the Wheatgerm Oil, you can create a nice ointment that you want to apply directly to the healing wound twice a day. This is a great treatment for large, deep wounds.

Vitamins and Herbal Pills
* Bromelain: Bromelain cleans the cells and has anti-inflammatory properties to a wound, which in turn helps reduce scarring. You can take one 500mg capsule twice a day, which will help heal the would and break down debris around the wound.
* Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Zinc: The combination of these three vitamins and mineral makes a powerful treatment, so you will want to take the following dosage every 4 hours until the wound is healed (please consult your doctor to make sure of proper dosage amounts, although the vitamins are herbal and will not hurt your, if you have any questions, ask before doing). Take 500mg of Vitamin 2, 400IU of Vitamin E, and 10mg of zinc.

Don't pick: Do not under any circumstance pick the scab off of a healing wound. The scab is important to the healing process, and when removed, you are damaging the tissues all over again. In many cases, you are actually removing good tissues with the scab, which creates a larger wound. When you pick a scab, you are starting the healing process over.
