How to Prevent Varicose Veins

May 18th 2009 12:57
Varicose veins are unwanted... Plain and simple. No woman wants to walk around with large blue/purple veins crawling all over her legs. It's just not attractive, so it's best that you try to prevent it earlier before they start to appear. Although, in many cases varicose veins can be genetic and hereditary, there are a few things that you can help do to reduce your varicose veins, and the risk thereof.

Keep Your Legs Uncrossed By crossing your legs, you're slowing the flow of blood back up to your heart, which increased the pressure on leg veins.

Wear The Right Socks By wearing appropriately fitted socks or below-the-knee compression stockings, you can help keep everything flowing in your lower legs.

Beat Bulging By Relaxing When you find that you have to stand a good bit, the blood will pool in your legs, which can cause the veins in your legs to widen and hurt. So, what you want to do is to put your feet up for at least 10 minutes once or twice a day so that the blood can flow away from your veins.

Reduce Water retention With Pineapple Pineapple is rich in bromelain, which is an enzyme that can help rid the body of excess fluids, which can stress your veins. If you're not a big pineapple fan, you can take bromelain capsules.

Boost Circulation with Gentle Exercise Low-impact activities such as walking, cycling, and swimming, can improve your overall circulation without adding any extra pressure to your veins.

Take Horse Chestnut By taking regular doses of horse chestnut seed extract, you can reduce the symptoms of varicose veins, including leg swelling and pain. Aescin, is a compound in the horse chestnut seed extract that can slow leakage from the blood vessel walls. It's suggested that you try 300-600mg every 12 hours for 12 weeks.

they always used to tell us crossing our legs would give us varicose veins, i was never sure if it was an old wives tale (like sitting on cold concrete gives you hemorrhoids), but how you have explained it here makes sense

Yea... I've been trying extra hard to not cross my legs, but it's so hard because you grow up being told to cross them. I've never heard about the concrete thing though.
