How to Treat Osteoporosis
June 8th 2010 13:09
If you've been diagnosed with osteoporosis, you want to keep in mind that in order to treat your condition you need to combine nutrition, exercise, safety measures, and medication, in order for best prognosis and results.
Nutrition- You want to get plenty of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D to help encourage and maintain bone growth and health.
Exercise- Perform weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging, hiking, and dancing. You want to increase your bone density, strength, coordination, and balance. All you need to do is exercise for at least 20 minutes a day about 3 to 4 times a week.
Medication- Your doctor may prescribe a medication that you should take regularly. There are many different types of medications that you and your doctor may want to consider.
* Alendronate
* Bisphophonates
* Calcitonin-salmon
* Estrogen replacement therapy
* Raloxifine
* Risedronate
* Synthetic parathyroid hormone
* Zoledronic acid
Safety- Safety is a big concern. Because osteoporosis weakens the bones, you want to be extra careful of slippery floors, uneven surfaces, and stairs. So many things may trip you, and you don't want to fall, as with more brittle bones and less density in the bones, there's a higher chance of breaking something, which is something you want to avoid. When keeping in mind your own safety, consider the following tips to avoid any potential hazards.
* Avoid slippery surfaces
* Install hand rails
* Keep surfaces smooth and uncluttered
* Provide adequate lighting
* Use a cane or walker
* Wear eyeglasses
* Wear rubber-soled, flat shoes
As long as you manage your diet, supplements, exercise, and overall health, you can maintain osteoporosis and have a good prognosis. Just remember that you need to take care of yourself and your body. Be careful around certain surfaces, children and pets that may trip you, and any obstacles that may cause you to trip or fall.
