What Causes Osteoporosis in Women?
May 28th 2010 15:52
We've all heard of osteoporosis and the importance of eating healthy, taking our vitamins, and exercising regularly in order to prevent osteoporosis. You may be surprised, though, as to what all can potentially cause osteoporosis; it's a little scary.
* Age
* Cigarette smoking
* Deficiencies (calcium and Vitamin D most common)
* Excessive alcohol consumption
* Excessive caffeine consumption
* Hormone imbalance
* Inactive lifestyle
* Kidney diseases and conditions
* Low estrogen
* Medications
* Menopause
* Poor diet
* Pregnancy
* Race (more common among Caucasians and Asians)
* Thyroid conditions
* Some cancers
* Underweight
* Various diseases
Believe it or not, osteoporosis actually starts in childhood. As you age, your bone density decreases, so in your 20s and early 30s, bone density is the highest, but as you age, the more your bone density decreases. As your bone mass decreases, you are more susceptible to breaks and fractures because your bones will become brittle and porous.
As women age, they are more and more at risk of developing osteoporosis. It's estimated that about 55% of women over 50 are at a high risk of developing osteoporosis.
The National Osteoporosis Foundations says that about 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and about 34 million have low bone mass (osteopenia). Because there are so many different causes of osteoporosis, it's hard to prevent them all. So, you want to make sure that you exercise regularly, take your vitamins and calcium supplements, and make sure that you eat a balanced diet.
