Common Misconceptions About Women's Bodies
August 8th 2009 15:31
There are many myths about everything and anything, but there are a few about the female body that most people believe. It's hard to find the right information, so people keep telling the wrong information. Here are the most common misconceptions about the female body. I was kind of surprised by some of these. If you have any others, please share them in the comments section below; I'd be interested to hear any others.
Women can't get pregnant during her period.
A woman can conceive during menstruation. Once inside the body, sperm can wait up to a week for an egg. Because ovulation can occur right after or even during the bleeding portion of a menstrual cycle, there is chance that a woman can get pregnant during her period.
Menopause causes sex drive to take a nosedive.
A woman's Change is not necessarily going to change what happens in bed. A woman may experience hot flashes and other discomforts while going through menopause that may make her temporarily not in the mood for sex, but there isn't a proven direct link between a low sex drive and menopause.
Antibiotics make birth control pills unreliable.
Even some physicians believe that an antibiotic will have an effect on birth control pills, but even without any other medications, birth control pills fail 1% of the time anyway, so that failure rate isn't going to be greatly affected by an antibiotic.
There is actually one exception to that rule, which is Rifampin, which is an antibiotic prescribed for tuberculosis; Rifampin lowers the pregnancy-protecting hormone levels that birth control pills induce, but it has not been proven as to whether or not the particular antibiotic has enough effect to make that large of a difference to increase the risk of pregnancy while on a birth control pill and the antibiotic.
Women and men need equal sleep.
There have been many tests and studies on this myth along, and it's been found that women who toss and turn more not only causes more psychological distress, but it also raises insulin and inflammation levels. There was one study that found that women who slept five or less hours a night where twice as likely to suffer from hypertension, than women who slept seven or more hours. When studying men, there wasn't the same relationship.
A doctor can tell if a woman is a virgin.
Even if the doctor used a 10-fold magnification, he won't be able to accurately determine whether or not a female is a virgin or not. It's just not as simple as looking for a hole in the hymen, as there is always a hole in the hymen.
