To Be or Not To Be a Mother -Part Two

October 25th 2006 15:39
Last night the 20/20 producer and crew slept over my house. And Josh slept for four hours straight. A new record. Maybe they should sleep over every night. Every night that is until he’s eighteen, at which time he goes off to college, I change the door locks and I finally get some well-earned sleep.

When Josh woke up so did the 20/20 team. With cameras rolling they followed me and my husband as we feed, rocked and diapered him before laying him back in his crib and trying to get back to sleep. The whole thing was uncomfortable and at least from my perspective, embarrassing. But my husband was in fifteen minutes of fame heaven.

The next morning bright and early John Stossel arrived to interview me and my husband. During which time he asked and I confessed to sometimes having thoughts of tossing my infant son out the window. Now that I think about it that probably wasn’t the most politically correct response, but I was tired and it was true.

There was one highlight to the whole experience. Abby, the producer had Josh lie in a bassinet that was attached to a moving device. It was set close to the ground and gentle motion moved the bassinet to and fro. According to her it was a new product designed to quiet colicky babies but it hadn’t yet reached the market place. Did it work? Does the word miracle mean anything to you? Well it did to me. Josh didn’t cry once when that bassinet was in motion.

I was hooked. I had to have that bassinet and I made sure Abby knew it. “Please, please Ms. 20/20 Producer please let me keep this bassinet. Whatever it costs.” Well Abby, my new best friend, told me she was going to do one better. She was going to have a new one shipped to me. At no charge. If I could have bestowed sainthood on that woman I would have done it right then and there.

P.S. Weeks later, Josh still crying, the moving bassinet still hadn’t arrived so I called Abby to follow-up. Again she promised to make it so. I told her to forget the new one that I’d gladly take the used one but she insisted on giving me new.

P.P.S. The bassinet never came and Abby never returned my follow-up call to the follow-up (I knew I should have taken a hint the first time but I’d found that desperation supersedes pride). She did however send a cute one piece wool outfit. Unfortunately, Josh still cried when he wore it.
