How to Use an Asthma Inhaler

January 18th 2012 23:30
There are different types of asthma inhalers that your doctor may prescribe to you. Each one will be used differently, so you'll want to make sure that you follow the directions properly.

Diskus Inhaler- You want to use your dominant hand and hold the inhaler with your thumb on the thumb notch next to the dose counter. Slide the diskus open by pushing with your thumb, holding the inhaler steady with your other hand. When you hear a click, the medication has been released. Place your mouth over the mouth piece and make a tight seal, inhaling deeply for 5-10 seconds.

Metered Dose Inhaler- Shake the inhaler first. Exhale. Then place the inhaler in your mouth. Take a deep breath as you depress the silver canister in the inhaler. Hold your breath for 5-10 seconds.

Twisthaler- When you remove the cap, the medication is loaded into the inhale device and the dose counter will decrease by one dose. Hold the inhaler up to your mouth, make a tight seal with your lips around the tip of the inhaler, and take a deep breath. Hold your breath for 5-10 seconds and exhale normally.

These three types of inhalers are just three common inhalers. If you have a different inhaler, you need to consult your doctor for instructions on how to properly use your asthma inhaler.

First Signs of Osteoporosis

October 8th 2011 18:33
As a woman, it's very important that you are aware of the signs of osteoporosis, so that you can speak with your physician before it starts to evolve.

Well, unfortunately, most women do not have any symptoms of the illness, so sometimes it can be hard to tell if you have it or not.

One of the early signs is loss of height because of a curvature or compressed spine, which is caused by weakened vertebrae. Basically, the vertebrae weaken and start to collapse, causing a loss of height.

With this, there may be some pain or aching, but other than that, there are generally few signs of early osteoporosis.

What you really need to pay attention to is what may make you more prone to the disease.

* A woman.
* Over 40.
* Caucasian or of Asian descent (more prone than African American).
* Postmenopausal.
* Diet low in calcium consumption.
* Intestinal problem that causes calcium from being properly absorbed.
* Hyperthyroidism.
* Lack of exercise.
* Thin body frame.
* Medications.
* Smoke.
* Drink too much alcohol.
* Family history of osteoporosis
* History of fragile bones.
