Hatred of the Roma people in Italy reaches new heights

July 21st 2008 00:27

When I was young, my mother always wanted me to understand the Haulocst and what happened to the Jewish people. We were told that it was up to us to make sure nothing like that ever happened again.

But when I look at Italy lately I get worried, is this another ethnic cleansing?

The bodies of two drowned Roma children lie covered by towels on an Italian beach while holidaymakers carry on unfazed enjoying the sun. They were among four Roma children who had gone onto the beach to beg.

Cristina Ibramovitc, 12, and Viola Ibramovitc, 11, were left on the sand for an hour among 'indifferent' holidaymakers after being caught in rough seas.

Their death highlighted Italy's dramatic problem with Roma gypsy youngsters.

Last month Italian interior minister Roberto Maroni announced controversial plans for fingerprints to be taken from all Roma children, a move widely condemned.

Minister Maroni said the plan would cut down on parents who sent their children onto the streets to beg instead of sending them to school.

They are not welcome anywhere so what do we do with them?

They're no angels Cib, a 17 year old girl was caught trying to steal a baby, she was chased by the mother and had to be rescued by police otherwise they would have lynched her.

That incident set Naples off, it erupted in fury, with local women leading the marches on the Roma camps to the chant of “Fuori, fuori [Out, out]” and “go home, dirty child stealers”. Night after night young men — allegedly acting on the orders of powerful local clans of the Camorra, the Naples Mafia — set the sites ablaze. Blocking attempts by the fire brigade to put out the fires, the women shouting "You put these fires out and we will start them again".

It seems they don't work and steal anything that's not nailed down. Parents also send their children out every day to beg in the streets instead of attending school. No country wants them and who can blame them?

Although not as drastic as the situation in Europe, a situation is brewing in Florida's Broward County between a Pentacostal church started up for Roma people in that area. The county government (and they are awfully strong in the American South) got the "bright" idea of pushing the Roma off the land so it could use it to build a drug rehab shelter. But this was before the big cash crunch that hit Florida recently yet still the Roma there are facing uncertain future even though the county government decided it couldn't afford the shelter.

Even in the United States, the Bible Belt no less, a Pentacostal Roma Church can't escape harrassment, not to mention all the money, time and heartbreak it invested of precious parishioners money.

They get it wherever they seem to go, and in the FL case, this was beyond my belief that it'd happen here and the Bible belt. Had they been real WASPs, or Souther Baptists with American-sounding names: different story altogether. And I'm not even Protestant. I'm Catholic. But a raw deal is a raw deal.

It seems we only get one side of the story. The Italian ministry wants to crack down on the PARENTS who send their children to beg rather than go to school.

They don't beg because they are poor but rather for extra money. Many times I passed the gypsy camps to see healthy people running with crutches so they can put on their dramatics that foreign tourists fall for.

Don't blame the Italian government from wanting to stop these criminals who are also prostitutes from destroying their culture and city.

As far as the dead children on the beach, what's the REAL story? Many Italians cover themselves from the sun on the beach, so these drowned victims appeared like sleeping beach people.

If they are not welcommed anywhere, invite them into your home, and enjoy!

Signals, I don't believe your comments 'They don't beg because they are poor but rather for extra money'.

I now know that the gypsies are hated all over the world but don't pretend to know the reason why. I just think it's sad.

You sound very angry Signals.

Hi Anonymous, that was very interesting, I had no idea it was going on in Florida of all places, thanks.

Hi Morgan, I didn't know about them either until last week I saw a picture of a gypsy family camped at the derelict site of the Athens olympics. There was a small tent, a gas cylinder and a unkempt little child - it struck me as the epitome of utter hopelessness.

I hear in Europe no one will employ them, therein lies the probably cause.

Unbelievable - so technically, if they are beggars, then they are dispensable. What about the Italian Government getting together with municipalities and working some solution to this major issue. All countries have their beggars but a life is a life and the nonchalance attitude of the beach goers makes me wonder how desensitized they have become to the loss of a young one. What a horror in the making!
