Pro-Life - The Right to Live
March 14th 2009 14:53
Pro-Life is the term that represents a political and ethical view towards abortion and the rights of human fetuses and embryos, but it can also be used when referring to euthanasia, human cloning, the death penalty, and stem cell research. Here, I'm using the term, "Pro-Life" in reference to abortion and the right that human fetuses and embryos have at a life.
Those individuals who are pro-life believe that human life should be valued from conception or implantation until a natural death. They believe that anyone, who destroys an embryo or fetus is destroying a person, which in turn is considered ethically and morally wrong.
In some cases, those who are adamantly pro-life believe that even fetuses who will die shortly after birth, such as with anencephalitc fetuses, should be given the chance to be born.
You will find that many, but not all, pro-life activists are feminists, as well. Pro-life feminism is the opposition of abortion based on the ideals of feminism by upholding the the female's right to carry a pre-born child and to the rights of the child. Those who take this end of pro-life believe that abortion is not a necessity but it has served as a manner to hurt women more than benefit them. Abortion rights do not empower women to make the choice of bearing a child, but it disempowers the female body for profit of the society and for a violent act against the female body and her offspring.
Many feminists who have pro-life beliefs and who are anti-abortion believe that abortion, as a whole is unfair to minority women and poor women, as women of color and low-incomes are more likely to have an abortion when compared with white women or middle class women.
Looking at the debate from a political standpoint, the Republican Party advocated a pro-life platform, whereas the Democratic party is pro-choice. Even though some Republicans are not pro-life, they must abide the party's beliefs at pro-life.
I find that women typically have the choice before having sex as to a wide and varied number and types of birth control methods, ranging from condoms, the pill, the shot, various feminine birth control implants, and abstinence.
But, in cases of incest and rape, I have not fully formed my opinion. All that I know and believe is that there are always willing adoptive parents and foster homes where children can be loved and cared for.
Even in cases, where the child is going to be permanently handicapped- mentally and/or physically- there are homes with loving families willing to foster and/or adopt these children. I have known couples who have adopted handicapped children, so it's not a myth.
There are almost always means of caring for a child, and if you know that you cannot care for a child due to your age, maturity, or financial situation, then you should make the choice of birth control before you have sex, so that you don't have to contemplate the choice of abortion.
Unborn fetuses are human, and abortion is the means of killing a life. Children should be loved, cherished, and cared for, not murdered before they are given a chance.
