Deer take to the water in London
July 24th 2008 01:29
Red deer enjoy a dip in London’s Richmond Park yesterday when the temperature hit 27C.
Wild deer have roamed freely in the 2,300-acre park for 400 years, since its days as a royal hunting estate. It is home to 300 red deer and 350 fallow deer. Because there are no predators and the park is walled so that the deer can't wander off, the herd grows rapidly and has to be culled every year.
The park wardens keep the population to 650 animals to be sure there is enough food for them all. At its peak, the number of deer reached 1,000 in 1985.
