How to Pick a Bathing Suit Fit for Your Body

May 6th 2009 19:21
When it comes time to picking out a new swim suit, whether you get one every year or your old one is plain worn out, you want to make sure that you pick a bathing suit that fits your body's shape. If you know the simple tips and what to look for when choosing a bathing suit, it can be simple. Just remember that you know your body best, and you'll be the woman wearing the swim suit, so just because the trend of the year says to wear a big buckle, it doesn't mean that you have to.

* Apple Shapes- You have broader shoulders and smaller hips, so you'll want to consider a two-piece bikini or a tankini with a solid colored top with a patterned bottom. This will give you a more balanced appearance.
* Pear-Shaped Bodies- You have larger hips and smaller shoulders, so you'll want to consider a one-piece bathing suit that has a design, creating the illusion of a waistline. You should stay away from boyshorts, as this can create a wide and large bum/waist area.
* Athletic Body Types- If you have a slender, athletic body with shoulders, waist, and hips that are overall smaller in width, you'll want to consider a one-piece or a two-piece bathing suit that has detailing and designs along the waistline to give you a more hourglass figure. In some cases, slender bodies can be perfect for boyshorts, without making you look bottom-heavy.
* Hourglass Shapes- If you have an hourglass figure, you have balanced shoulders and hips with a smaller waist, you're in luck because just about any style of bathing suit will flatter your figure.

* Petite Women- Choose bathing suits that has a high-cut thigh, as this will make your legs appear longer. You want to avoid boyshorts and skirted bottoms, as these can make your legs appear shorter. Also consider vertical patterns or bright colors with a V shaped, as it will draw the eye up and down.
* Tall Women- You want to consider an all-over pattern as this will draw attention away from your height and to other areas that you want to draw attention to.

* Enhance Small Busts- You can try a halter bikini that has a seam underneath the bust line or a slightly padded top in order to give the appearance of a larger bust. You may also want to consider a bathing suit that has texture which can help distract from your bust line.
* Support Large Busts- You want to choose a bathing suit top with an underwire and cup sizes. You should consider high cut or straight-across tops, and discard any plunging necklines.
* Minimize a Large Abdomen- Choose a V shaped top to enhance your bust and a solid color bottom that will create contrast against the V shape will call attention away from the larger mid-section. You want to make sure that you do avoid horizontal stripes, as they will cut your height in half, which will accentuate your waist. You want to stick with solids or small print designs.
* Minimize Thighs- Find a one-piece suit or two-piece bottoms that have a high leg cut because the higher the cut, the longer your legs will look. You want to stay away from the boy-cut styles, as it will make your legs look stocky.

You want to make sure that you are comfortable in what you choose. People will notice you, even if you're just laying out at the pool. It's a good idea to shop for a new bathing suit with as few distractions as possible, which means if you have children, don't bring them with you.

Choosing a Bathing Suit Top
When choosing the top of a two-piece bathing suit, it's a good idea to choose the top as you would your bra. You want your bathing suit top to fit your breasts the same way a good bra will.
* V-bra lines accentuate a large breast, but make small breasts appear flat (unless they have very narrow straps - starting adjacent to the armpit)
* Tube styles tops are more flattering to smaller breasts

Tip: Too much padding in your bathing suit top will stay wet longer, which will keep your bust cold and it'll wear very uncomfortable.

Choosing a Bathing Suit Bottom
You want to pay close attention to the bottom of your swim suit because you don't want it to ride up your bum while you walk or after it's wet. Remember that unless you're wearing a thong bathing suit bottom, it's really unattractive to have your bum show, not even a little crack when you bend over.
* U or V shaped bottoms with a lower back (cut right above the butt crack) will call attention to you bum, making it appear larger and rounder.
* A swim suit bottom that cuts straight across the back or that is a solid color throughout the waist line will minimize your butt.

When my wife asks me about how her swim suit fits, I take a series of pictures and let her judge for herself.

It's safer than making up a contrived remark that's been prefaced with a pregnant pause.

Swim suit shopping: one of the pleasures of being male. You get to walk around with your lady and see her in loads of sexy, skimpy things.

This is an absolutely brilliant little guide, Whitney! It'll make me sound terribly clever and knowledgeable about fashion and clothes' cut and stuff. I shall show it to my lady immediately. Thanks!

I am petite but slightly pear shaped. Up until last year it was bikini all the way but I have a slightly bumpy tummy now...the great thing about getting older and drinking beer - not! I discovered The Miracle Suit. A one piece with a little bit that pulls yourr tummy in.and gives you a great waistline..and it's as sexy as hell. Who needs a bikini now, I'm sold one my one piece!

Great guide!!

Whitney,

There is no advice for an hourglass shaped body, but I am an action girl when it comes to body surfing and i need stuff that will stay on and not embarass me. I won*t even go near the water without my boardies on over my one piece.

When choosing the top of a two-piece bathing suit, it's a good idea to choose the top as you would your bra. You want your bathing suit top to fit your breasts the same way a good bra will.

I go for the surf, not the fashion, but this is really good advice, especially if you are not flat chested by a long shot. Those waves can get pretty rough sometimes and I like the confidence of things remaining where they should be, when i emerge.

Funny, I still like me boardies on in the pool too, if you can get me to go into one. . the pee and chlorine ause my eyes to puff my eyes something chronic!

Interesting post.

Lilla ..

Nevar, that's a really good idea. It's hard to judge for yourself in a mirror, but pictures really do tell a thousands words. Plus, even if you think it looks fine, she really may not once she sees pictures that someone has taken of her in it. I'd be pretty upset if the bathing suit enhanced an undesirable feature or something like that and didn't notice till after the fact.

Spike, that's why women should make sure to have the proper fitted bathing suit... Guys like to drool after women, and we all want to make sure if we're being stared at and checked out, even by out special guy/gal that we look good, especially with so little clothing covering the body. Hopefully, your special lady finds the tips useful.

world of gaye, I agree that there are too many women who want to wear bikinis that don't need to, but the want typically oversees the need.

Cheryl, one piece swim suits can be quite gorgeous when the right design and pattern is chosen. So many women pass them up, but they can be a great choice. Even the longer tank-tinis.

Lilla, for the most part hourglass shapes can pretty much wear anything they'd like and look good in them. For a more active summer suit, you don't necessarily have to neglect fashion, but it can be hard to be fully active in a suit that has tons of ties tying your lady parts behind coverage.

I got a new bathing suit last summer and only wore it once. It looked great on, I just find I'm over the 'immerse body in large body' of water thing.

My husband and son think I'm mad, but I just prefer to stay out of the sun when it's hot.

I have always found that a black string speedo-thong compliments me quite well at the beach.

Carolyn, I'm not a fan of staying in the sun, but if I am, I'm not usually in a bathing suit... I'd rather shorts and a tank top.

Jarrah, that's an interesting choice that not many are confident enough to show off.

Should a bathing suit bottom fit just perfect or should it be slightly more fitted since it gives way when wet and will stretch out over time???

Generally, you want the bottom to fit. If you buy it a size larger, it's typically going to be noticeable. I'm not sure what your difference between fitted and perfect is. Generally fitted is going to be more along the body, and not loose.

Bathing suits generally don't stretch like a pair of jeans will as you wear them throughout the day.

When buying the bathing suit bottom, purchase it to fit.
