Choosing Bridesmaid Dresses

February 9th 2010 17:22
When planning your wedding, your dress is pretty important, but you have to consider the dresses of your bridesmaids. You don't want to be the bride that makes her friends wear hideous dresses, and you don't want to be the bride who just doesn't care.

Be nice about this. Please don't make your bridesmaids where neon pink dresses that have bright purple bows tied behind their back. It's not flattering the them, and it's not flattering to you or your wedding if you do that.

When choosing bridesmaid dresses, you want to make sure that you keep each person's body type in mind. You want to try to find something that flatters each woman. That said, you don't have to have each bridesmaid in the same dress; just try to stick with the same color and around-about the same length, and you'll be good to go.

When you are looking for dresses, ask your wedding party for their advice. What do they want to wear? That will help prevent choosing ugly bridesmaid dresses, and it will potentially prevent losing your friends over a silly dress.

You want the dresses to match the theme of your wedding, whether you're having a formal wedding, informal, or a true themed wedding. Also, make sure that your bridesmaid dresses provide some contrast to your own, but you still want them to be a similar style and theme. You don't want to be in an elegant gown, and have your bridesmaids in paper sacks.

Coordinate your bridesmaid dresses with the colors of your wedding. You don't want them to blend in, but have them match. If you're colors are white, black, and green, consider having the dresses some shade of green. If you're wedding colors are white and purple, consider a pastel purple color.

Also, consider the length of the dress. If you're having a formal wedding, you want everyone in long, floor length dresses. If it's going to be more of an informal or an outdoor wedding, consider knee length dresses, instead.

Make sure that the dresses are comfortable. Remember they will be standing, walking, and probably dancing in their dresses (unless they change before the reception). You'll want to make sure that your bridesmaids can more around, which is why it's always a plus to have them go to the bridal stores with you so that they can try on the dresses and give you their opinion. You don't have to consider their opinion, but they'd appreciate it if you did.

Don't forget weather, especially if you're having an outdoor wedding. You don't want your bridesmaids to freeze wearing sleeveless gowns out in the 40F degree weather. You may not want long sleeve dresses in your wedding, but keep the health of your wedding party in mind.

Lastly, shop for price. Not all prices will be the same, and there are plenty of options that you can choose from. Check out local boutiques, large bridal stores, wedding expos, specialty stores, online stores, and fashion magazines. Consider layaway when purchasing the dresses; it's convenient and definitely easier on the budget.
