Debtland

March 31st 2008 21:56

After watching Four Corners 'Debtland' last night it made me feel more anxious than usual. This isn't America's sub-prime problem, it's Australia's bad debt problem. As many as 300,000 Australian households may be at risk of losing their homes.

We got to meet Dianne and her family who are frontline casualties. Their Kellyville home is being repossessed after constant refinancing landed them with two mortgages, one at 10 per cent and another – on terms they didn’t understand - at 20 per cent.

I can hear you thinking 'what fools' but I understand the Australian obsession of wanting to buy your own home, it's in the blood. At least she and her husband worked their guts out giving it a go.

We watch Dianne, her husband and their two small children lose their last ounce of dignity, having the locks changed and giving back the keys to their house. Then their hopes rise because if the auction results in a sale of $650000, they could repay all their debts. Unfortunately no bidders came forward and it was handed in.

Thank God they have a kind neighbour, they are sleeping on the floor of their double garage. It's a bit nippy this morning and I thought of this poor woman waking up on a mattress on a cold garage floor, what a nightmare.

Dog, cat and donkey butchers caught

March 31st 2008 20:35

Under Islamic law it is forbidden to eat the meat of any carnivore or of any animal that has not been slaughtered in the traditional way so two Cairo butchers could be in deep trouble. They have been caught for passing off donkey, cat and dog carcasses as beef.

High inflation in Egypt in recent months is making it harder for people to buy meat. Around 40 per cent of Egyptians live on or near the poverty line of two dollars a day, according to the World Bank.

Mohammed Mahmud Khalifa, 35, was caught red-handed as he butchered a donkey he had found by the roadside in a street in the densely packed Cairo district of Bulaq-Dakrur, the official said.

He confessed to collecting carcasses from around Cairo and selling their meat to Wasfi Sawiris, 53, for five Egyptian pounds (less than a dollar) a kilo, a tenth of the normal price for beef. Sawiris then allegedly ground the meat up with spices to disguise the taste before selling it to local restaurants.

It was not clear how long the men have been doing this but more than 1,700kg of meat was found in Sawiris's shop, mostly donkey but also including cat, dog and horse meat.

Private Jake Covco

March 31st 2008 06:07

'Don't let my pain happen to others' says Shelley Covco.

I don't know about you but I'm just about fed up to the back teeth hearing about soldier Private Jake Covco. It seems to have been going on forever. Okay her husband is dead but do we need to keep hearing about it month after boring month? All this kafoofle because Mrs. Kovco wants the jury to find Private Kovco's death was accidental and not scuicide.

Her Counsel Craig Briscoe said "It has been suggested that Jake deliberately pulled the trigger in the course of joking around ... the evidence is to the contrary," he said.

"Yes, they were involved in high jinks and joking around and singing... but not at the time the gun discharged."

Does anybody really care?

I don't think the poor girl's the sharpest knife in the draw either, she seemed shocked to hear that he'd been playing away with another woman, you'd have to be an eternal optimist married to a serviceman and expect him to remain celibate until he comes home. Give me strength.

The inquest is continuing, and continuing, and continuing.....

The Man in the Glass

I found this poem by Peter Dale Wimbrow Sr and like it. He wrote it in 1934. He was an American poet, songwriter, artist, writer, singer, painter and it's said his biggest talent was truly loving people - wow what a man!

Okay, I acknowledge every woman in the universe seems to hate Heather Mills but not me. I can't believe that so many people on the Orble site are so quick to judge that Sir Paul (a vegetarian - give me strength) comes out smelling like a rose and Heather Mills is the villian

After reading this article, it makes you wonder just what goes on in the kitchens of our restaurants. I can't believe that a undated batch of cream asparagus sauce was taken from the coolroom, reheated and cooled over and over again, without any thought for their customer's health. It's an absolute disgrace.

The Sous chef Douglas Gunn 33 who prepared a cream asparagus sauce eaten by a diner who later died has told an inquest that he was not trained to be aware of toxic pathogenic bacteria that could form in the preparation of some vegetables. Mr Gunn, 33, who until May last year had been the second chef at the prominent Tables restaurant in Pymble, said he believed the lack of knowledge about vegetable bacteria toxins was the same throughout the food industry and that the training of apprentice chefs only dealt with warnings on the handling of fish, poultry and meat

It seems the Jackson family is in financial trouble as a result of poor financial decisions over the years. One brother is stacking shelves in the supermarket, another repairing cars and others waiting for Janet's next cheque to arrive. A sad end for such a remarkably talented family

It seems as though the entire world hates America. And there are those, of course, who would like to destroy us, ranging from Islamofascist religious fanatics to socialist and communist believers, to the Americans who hate America crowd, all blaming us for the ills of the world. To what end? Their reasons may vary, but it is certainly not to better the lot of mankind, unless of course you are among those who happen to believe the world would be better off without us and with them in charge. But, who would really be better off if we didn't exist?

Without doubt, if America did not exist, the world would be a very different place. I just don't know if those who hate America so much and would like to destroy us have thought much beyond the ends of their noses

I was fascinated to hear about this news story and very disappointed I couldn't get any pictures of this incredible event. Helicopters had to be used to rescue hundreds of Russian fishermen stranded on ice sheets drifting into the Pacific Ocean. The actual number rescued seems to vary.

The men had walked a few kilometres across the pack ice surrounding the remote island of Sakhalin in Russia's far-east to fish over the Sea of Okhotsk, news agencies reported
